Dr. Mike McElveen

Dr. Michael McElveen was born and raised in Amite,  LA .  He graduated from Amite High School and then attended  Louisiana Tech University in Ruston LA where he graduated with a bachelors degree in animal science.   Dr. Mike earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine from LSU in 1989.  He then went back to Ruston to work in a mixed animal practice for a year before returning to Baton Rouge and working at an emergency clinic in New Orleans.  Dr. Mike and Dr. Ron Ponthieux opened the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital in July of 1995. Dr. Mike and Dr. Ron bring a total of 49 years of emergency experience to the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital and have taken care of more than 43,000 emergency cases for people in the greater Baton Rouge area since 1995.  Dr. Mike has been committed to providing the best emergency care in the Baton Rouge area since 1995 and will continue to provide that care to the area for many years to come. 

Dr. Ron Ponthieu

Dr. Ron Ponthieu completed East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana and moved on to Louisiana Tech from 1978-1981.  Dr. Ron went on to Louisiana State University Veterinary School from 1981-19985.  He gained practical veterinary experience at Helouin Veterinary Hospital from 1985-1990, and then opened Bluebonnet Veterinary Hospital in April of 1990.  Dr. Ron and Dr. Mike McElveen opened the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital in 1995.  Dr. Ron’s special veterinary interests include orthopedic, ophthalmology, general surgery and emergency medicine.  Dr. Ron has 3 daughters and enjoys hunting, fishing and LSU sports.  He is also the current owner of Bluebonnet Veterinary Hospital.

Stephanie Charles, Practice Manager

Stephanie has years of experience as a Veterinary Technician, dog obedience training, Retriever & field trial experience. She left animal employment to acquire a Bachelors degree in nursing to go along with a degree in Microbiology and Parasitology. She specialized in Cardio-Thoracic surgery in the operating Room and Surgical trauma cases in ICU. Now she is back to her passion; caring for animals and being the practice manager for Baton Rouge Animal Hospital and Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital. She states that she has never been happier and attributes that to the amazing Veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians and caring families she works with on a regular basis.
